Updated Guidelines and Safety Protocols for Rugby Manitoba

CURRENT PROTOCOLS

Now that the Province has moved to level orange on the Pandemic Response System, outdoor sports and recreation activities are allowed to resume. There is significant evidence that the spread of Covid does not frequently occur outdoors (https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2021/02/10/bjsports-2020-103714) which indicates a lower risk profile of outdoor sport.

  • Gathering – 50 athletes (coaches/managers/ATs exempt)
  • Facilities – Outdoor only, Indoor washroom facilities only.
  • Engagement – Maintain a consistent training cohort.
  • Equipment – Shared ball, flags, S&C equipment. Disinfect before and after use.
  • Enhanced Protocols – Daily self assessment & attestation. Hand Hygiene
  • Permitted Activities – contact training, small sided games, inter-club games
  • Restricted Activities – Inter-provincial games, tournaments
  • Travel – Restricted
  • Records – Must log all attendance and record attestations either online or keep paper copies.
  • Masks are only required for AT & indoor athletes.

Rugby Manitoba Premier Leagues To Kick Off In August

Tentative Start Dates:

 Preseason – late July/early August

Regular season – Week of August 9th

The Rugby Manitoba Premier League is the highest standard of club rugby in Manitoba. In 2021, Rugby Manitoba intends to offer two men's premier leagues and one women's premier league. Each league consists of smaller and more balanced competitive divisions to promote meaningful games being played each week. These leagues are for athletes wanting to play competitive rugby with a key focus on improving the standard of rugby across Manitoba.

All games will be recorded, analyzed and posted online for use as a selection tool for Provincial team selectors.

Champions of the top level premier leagues will be eligible for entry into the Canadian Club Rugby Championship qualifiers.

Late July/Early August – Pre Season Competition

Pre-season competition may be restricted to 10s, depending on provincial health orders limiting gathering sizes. Results from this competition will be used to seed each division for the 2021 regular season.

Week of August 9th – 10 Game Regular Season Commencement

In 2021, in an attempt to accommodate a wider range of player ability, dedication levels and to address club difficulty building depth in multiple sides, we will be splitting senior rugby into two categories, competitive (Rugby Manitoba Premier Leagues) and recreational (M-League and W-League)

For clubs interested in entering a team into any of these divisions for the upcoming season, they can contact the Rugby Manitoba office at mru@rugbymb.ca if more information is required.

Any new players who need help finding a team can also contact the Rugby Manitoba office for assistance.

Rugby Manitoba Expands Senior Competition for Men and Women

Tentative Start Dates:

 Preseason – late July/early August

Regular season – Week of August 9th

Rugby Manitoba is pleased to announce the start of two new divisions that will expand our senior level competition for both men and women in the province.

The M-League (men) and the W-League (women) are meant to ensure there is an appropriate competition structure for all levels of athletes. Rugby Manitoba will be implementing a new “game on” ruleset aimed at increasing opportunities for recreational and developing players. These divisions will also offer an opportunity to introduce new players to the sport.

This has been trialed successfully in New Zealand and England, and is a great opportunity for clubs to build their player base. Teams in these leagues would not play against Rugby Manitoba Premier League sides in league competition.

Key Division Rules

  • Minimum of 10 players per side up to 15
  • 40-minute minimum match length
  • Rolling substitutions
  • Optional uncontested scrums and lineouts
  • Terms of game decided with referee before kickoff

For clubs interested in entering a team into either of these divisions for the upcoming season, they can contact the Rugby Manitoba office at mru@rugbymb.ca if more information is required.

Any new players who need help finding a team can also contact the Rugby Manitoba office for assistance.
